Philippe Malouin x Flos Bilboquet Lamp

Canadian designer Philippe Malouin has unveiled his inaugural creation for Flos—a captivating and whimsical table lamp known as the Bilboquet lamp. Inspired by the concept of a magnetic ball joint and the traditional French game of bilboquet, this lamp embodies an almost anthropomorphic quality in its design.

The Bilboquet lamp consists of two vibrant cylinders connected by a magnetic sphere, reminiscent of a magnetic ball joint. The top cylinder has the ability to rotate fully around the sphere, allowing the light to be directed in any desired direction. Drawing from the shape of the bilboquet game tool—a wooden ball tied to a string with a cup-like structure—the lamp showcases a similar silhouette.

Philippe Malouin describes the Bilboquet lamp as simple in appearance but brimming with personality. Its adjustability allows for precise and playful manipulation of light, catering to a diverse range of functions. Whether utilized as a task light on a desk, a soft ambient light against a wall, or focused illumination for reading, the Bilboquet lamp radiates light precisely where it is needed.

Sustainability played a crucial role in the creation of the Bilboquet lamp for both Flos and Philippe Malouin. The lamp incorporates innovative materials to prioritize eco-friendliness. The external casing of the lamp is crafted from polycarbonate derived from a by-product of paper production, deviating from the conventional use of petroleum-based plastics. Flos emphasizes that this particular material does not require dedicated cultivation, resulting in a modest consumption of resources.

Available in a delightful three-color palette—sage, tomato, and linen—the Bilboquet lamp showcases a shade that extends beyond the main casing, adorning the cable and plug. It can be purchased directly from Flos and is priced at £247 GBP (approximately $300 USD), making it an accessible yet striking addition to any space.
