MAD Architects Shanghai Zhangjiang Cement Factory Warehouse Renovation

Beijing-based architectural firm MAD has recently unveiled its innovative design for the renovation of an old warehouse located on the south side of the Shanghai Zhangjiang Cement Factory. This particular site was once home to one of the largest cement factories during the city's peak of urban construction. The ambitious project aims to transform the area into a multifunctional public space that seamlessly integrates nature, commerce, and culture.

Rather than demolishing the existing architectural structure, MAD plans to preserve it, while infusing new life into the former industrial site by creating a captivating blend of old and new elements. The architects envision a three-dimensional hierarchy of time and physical dimensions through the juxtaposition of original and contemporary structures. To bring this vision to life, the design incorporates an ark-like roof that gives the impression of floating above the space.

Embracing a striking contrast between sleek futuristic aesthetics and the rustic charm of industrial decay, the warehouse space will feature a revamped façade that is brighter and more open. The western wall will be adorned with suspended glass curtain walls, allowing ample natural light to flood the interior and illuminate the space.

Upon entering the warehouse, visitors will be greeted by a long metal stairway that leads to an oasis-like rooftop area. Although it may appear reminiscent of an ominous spaceship, the staircase is designed to provide access to a serene and inviting rooftop retreat.

Ma Yansong, the founder of MAD, spoke passionately about the project, emphasizing the importance of preserving and utilizing industrial heritage. He believes that industrial sites not only carry historical memories but also provide a sense of history for the future. Rather than solely celebrating and preserving industrial aesthetics, the focus should be on embracing the spirit of the contemporary and the future.
