Benny the Greek is blazing a trail in the Aussie trap scene. He released a music video for his new single “Hand of God”. Benny the Greek is a Queensland-based rapper, model and fighter. The video was filmed by Stavros Vlachogiannis.
This song is an excellent introduction to Benny the Greek. In it, he lays the pain of his heart on the table and gives us a glimpse of his spiritual depth forged on the street and sharpened in prison. He immediately sets the tone of the song with a sample that asks us two questions:
Does the music have a message for you?
Does it tell you something or is it just loud noise?
My brother, we must pay homage to
My brodie back in jail. Got me missing in
prison ain't designed for you to fail, but the system is.
No more getting mail. No more visiting.
People see the outcome but never see the discipline.
Benny the Greek’s life after prison required readjustment through hard work. Taking all of the burpees, books and prayers from jail and applying that time spent to the outside. Though, fortunately for Benny it has been rewarding, it’s hard not to miss the connections to the inside, especially after spending considerable time there.
They say there's beauty in the struggle, bro.
He just want to know if he'll be home before the summer go.
And now another summer went now
waiting on connect course just me and my pen pal.
Yeah. My closest friend now is my misery.
See history repeats itself when you repeat the history.
Depression and recidivism are often the paths of least resistance after being released from prison. Benny the Greek embraces his misery, and shows strength to overcome the darkness within him, willingness to do what is hard in order not to fall into this vicious cycle. He knows it won’t go away, but that he has control.
Demons in my closet can’t do shit to me.
But the enemies within and devils feel no sympathy.
So many mysteries in life out of sight don't mean of mind. So I've been missing you tonight.
And Kim my daughter say the eulogy, please give me the ether last year I ‘int have my jewelry.
Benny the Greek is a proud father, and this makes his own struggle all the more painful. This makes success a required certainty, and sacrifices absolutely necessary.
Many sacrifices, that’s what love takes.
Most aren’t really built for it, the love and all the heartbreak.
Funny how they play you when you least expect. I told my shorty shit, but she ain’t keep a secret yet. No more rest in peaces just the pieces left.
Trying to find some peace of mind but dying just to see what’s next.
Rather be the underdog than upper-hander, remember times when I was broke and couldn’t rob a bandit.
Trying to teach a youth that they can seek redemption.
Free your mind young king. Watch it ease the tension.
I seek the truth before I seek attention. Nowadays can read the room before I leave it empty.
But that’s a lesson learned the hard way. Shed years of voices that I can’t shake and empty promises I can’t break. I say a thug’s prayer.
Benny the Greek’s music is imbued with Christian themes. This song eloquently lays out the emotional process of a man born-again in prison. Two things set him apart from other Christian artists especially in the United States: Benny the Greek has versatility in his style and brings a vulnerable perspective to the mic. This makes his music both powerful and approachable.
We must pay a homage.
