Love him or hate him, there's no denying the incredible partnership between Travis Scott and Nike/Jordan Brand. Over the years, they have released numerous highly sought-after sneakers, and with that comes a treasure trove of unreleased sample pairs. The latest to surface is an alternate version of the Travis Scott x fragment design x Air Jordan 1 Low sneaker.
While the exact backstory of this pair remains uncertain, one clear indication that it's a sample is the tooling code on the midsole, which reads "FA21." This suggests that it was a prototype that didn't make it to the retail market when the official release dropped in August 2021. There are several notable differences between this sample and the version that was eventually released. Firstly, this alternate iteration lacks the sail accents that were present on the retail pair. Additionally, the overlays feature a heavier use of blue, deviating from the black/blue combination seen on the released version. The Swooshes are entirely black on the sample, in contrast to the two-tone treatment on the retail pair. Text hits are also used on the midsoles and quarter panels, and there are no embossed logos on the heel, although the co-branded heel tabs remain intact. Lastly, the sample lacks the additional embellishments found on the tongue.
Interestingly, this isn't the first time we've seen a Travis Scott x fragment design x Air Jordan 1 Low sample. In September 2022, fragment design founder Hiroshi Fujiwara was spotted wearing a predominantly white sample. Unfortunately, it's highly unlikely that either of these sample versions will ever be released to the public.
