In May 2018, Awake NY founder Angelo Baque took to his Instagram Stories to announce four canceled collaborations between Awake NY and Converse's One Star sneakers. The reason for the cancellation has remained unknown. However, after five years, the two brands have come together to release three collaborative versions of the One Star Pro, along with a concise range of apparel.
Awake NY is known for its dedication to exploring, highlighting, and championing New York City culture and subcultures through its products. This collaboration with Converse continues that ethos by drawing inspiration from the vibrant skate and alternative music scene of early '90s New York City. During that period, Converse reintroduced the All Star from 1974 as the One Star, which quickly became a beloved silhouette within those scenes. Angelo Baque explains that the One Star holds a special connection to the early '90s punk and alternative artists he admired, such as Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, and the Beastie Boys. Wearing a pair of One Star's back then was a way to defy social norms and express individuality.
For this collaboration, the One Star Pro is presented in shaggy powder blue, black, and grey suede. The black and grey colorways were initially teased in the 2018 Instagram post mentioned earlier. Each shoe features bold Awake NY embroidery across the lateral quarter panel, overlapping the signature star cutout. The sneakers are finished with a high-gloss rubber midsole, a heel badge, and a thick stripe. In terms of performance, the One Star Pro enhances the original One Star with a skate-focused Converse CONS rubber outsole and a molded CX insole. The apparel collection includes co-branded hoodies, rugby shirts with a large star pattern on the back, and graphic tees.
The Awake NY x Converse One Star Pro collection, along with the accompanying apparel, will be released on October 12 via the Awake NY webstore and the brand's Lower East Side flagship store. The sneakers are priced at $95 USD, while the apparel ranges from $50 to $120 USD.
