Knoll Mies van der Rohe Tugendhat Chair Reissue

Renowned architect, interior designer, and academic Mies van der Rohe possessed a unique talent for refining forms while maintaining warmth and approachability. Regarding his furniture designs, the Tugendhat chair stands out as a prime example of this balance, and has now been re-issued by Knoll.

Originally designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1929, the Tugendhat chair features a thick, untufted seat with optional armrests for maximum comfort. Its cantilevered steel frame allows for effortless movement, enabling an individual sitting in it to shift seating positions without sacrificing comfort. The leather straps forming the back not only are a key piece of the chair's aesthetic but also provide extra support. As Jonathan Olivares, Knoll's senior vice president of design, notes, "When you sit in the chair, there’s a gentle bounce, giving the design a dynamic spirit. It engages the user within the space in a way that influences how the entire interior feels to that person."

To celebrate the chair's reissue, Knoll highlighted its connection to the Villa Tugendhat in Brno, Czech Republic, the home that the Tugendhat Chair was originally designed for.

The Tugendhat Chair is now available in a variety of materials and finishes via Knoll's webstore, with prices ranging from $5,195 USD to $7,695 USD.
