How did you first develop an interest in sneakers?

My interest in sneakers goes back to my childhood. I became a huge fan of sports, including basketball, at a young age, and I always paid attention to what my favorite athletes were wearing. Even as a very little kid, I thought that the original Air Jordans were the coolest thing I had ever seen. As a teenager, I was a huge fan of Shaquille O’Neal, and I immediately fell in love with the Shaqnosis. I remember when Michael Jordan debuted the Concord 11s, and I was as blown away as I remember Ahmad Rashad being when he saw them. The problem always was that my family didn’t have enough money for me to get these sneakers I loved so much, and it’s been wonderful to finally live out this sneakerhead dream.

What factors do you consider when deciding which sneakers to add to your collection?

There are a few factors that I consider when buying sneakers, including material quality, overall condition if I am purchasing used sneakers, and whether or not colorways fit with other clothes that I own. However, the main factor is simply whether or not I love the sneaker itself and if it’s a sneaker that I will wear. I do not buy sneakers to resell, and I do not buy sneakers to sit on a shelf.

What is your favorite sneaker in your collection and why does it hold a special place for you?

My favorite sneaker that I own is either the most recent retro of the Air Jordan Concord 11 or my patent leather Converse Chuck Taylor high tops. The Concord 11 is my favorite sneaker of all time. I think it’s the most beautiful sneaker ever made, and I love the memories I have of Jordan wearing them. The patent leather Chucks are the shoes I wore to my wedding, so there is a heavy sentimentality factor with those.

Can you describe your collection and any particular themes or focuses within it?

My collection is pretty diverse, honestly. Various Air Jordan silhouettes (especially those from the 80s and 90s) make up the majority of the collection, but I wouldn’t say I really have an overall theme or focus. I mostly just buy whatever I like and want to wear.

If you could have any sneaker in the world added to your collection, regardless of rarity or price, which one would it be and why?

It definitely would be a pair of OG Jordan 1s from 1985, any colorway, especially if the pair was wearable. It’d be so nice to own such a wonderful piece of sneaker history.

How do you stay updated with the latest sneaker releases and upcoming collaborations?

I keep up to date thanks to sneaker YouTube channels and sneaker Twitter accounts. My favorite sneaker YouTube channels are WearTesters, Sean Go, and Shade TV. WearTesters, specifically, is my most trusted resource. Chris and Jodi Chase always deliver such wonderful, knowledgeable content. And as far as copping new releases, I depend on the notifications I get from Twitter so I have the best chance possible.

Have you ever had to track down a rare or limited edition sneaker? Can you share the story behind it?

I recently managed to track down a pair of the 2020 Italy-exclusive release of the Nike Air Ship Pro in the banned black and red colorway. I love Air Ships as a whole, but what really drove my interest in the banned Air Ships is the history behind the pair and colorway. I waited for the right opportunity, and finally, a pair dropped on eBay in my size at a price that I could afford. Even though it’s not an OG pair from the 1980s, it’s still the one shoe I own that feels like a museum piece. It’s an honor to have it in my collection.

Are there any specific sneaker collaborations or limited edition releases that you are particularly proud to have in your collection?

I really like my Fragment-collab Converse Weapons, but that is mostly because I love the Weapons, it’s one of only a few recent releases of the silhouette, and not because it’s a collaboration. My favorite frequent sneaker collaborator is A Ma Maniere. I have a few Nike/Jordan x A Ma Maniere collab sneakers. I love their typical color scheme (burgundy/maroon is my favorite color), but I mostly love A Ma Maniere because of their mission, principles, and purpose. I love that it is a Black-owned brand dedicated to the celebration of Black empowerment and culture.

How do you approach the process of acquiring new sneakers for your collection? Do you prefer to buy them brand new or do you also enjoy hunting for pre-owned gems?

I am always looking for a deal. Even though my family and I live relatively comfortably, I am not in a position where I can buy any sneaker I’d like to have. That’s why I hardly ever buy sneakers above the retail price, and I am always looking for sneakers under retail, even if that means buying used in good condition. I always make sure that when I buy sneakers, new or used, that they will be checked for authenticity.

How do you ensure the authenticity of the sneakers in your collection?

I buy directly from the brands or from trusted retailers whenever I can. When this is not possible, however, I buy from online retailers like StockX and eBay that offer authenticity checks. I understand that there is always the chance for mistakes to happen during these checks, but if it’s a sneaker I really want, it’s a risk I am willing to take.

Can you discuss any challenges you’ve faced in maintaining and organizing your sneaker collection?

A lack of space! That’s really the biggest obstacle I have. If I had unlimited space, I’d probably never feel compelled to sell any sneakers that I own.

Are there any particular sneaker brands or designers that you are drawn to? Why?

I am a Nike and Jordan guy, primarily. However, I own sneakers from adidas, Puma, Reebok, Converse, New Balance, ASICS, Ewing Athletics, and AND1. I really have no brand allegiance; I just buy what I like.

Can you share any memorable experiences or interactions you’ve had within the sneaker community?

My favorite sneaker-related conversations have occurred with my sneakerhead students. I am a teacher, and I love wearing my sneakers to work. What’s great is that I have been able to better reach those students thanks to our common interest in shoes. It’s remarkable how, sometimes, something like an interest in sneakers can lead to better teacher/student rapport. I also love having sneaker conversations in online communities such as the WearTesters Discord group.

Are there any specific sneaker trends or styles that you find particularly interesting or influential?

There are plenty of modern sneakers that I love and wear, even casually. However, my favorite sneaker silhouettes came out of the 80s and 90s. So much of my interest in sneakers is fueled by nostalgia, and the shoes I love the most date back to my younger years.

Have you ever traded or sold sneakers from your collection? What factors do you consider when deciding to part ways with a pair?

I only ever sell sneakers when I am running out of room or when I don’t enjoy wearing them any more. While this doesn’t happen often, occasionally, I will “fall out of love” with a sneaker. When that happens, I will consider selling.

How do you take care of your sneakers to ensure their longevity and condition?

I clean my shoes after every wear. I also keep them in a cool, dry place where they can breathe. Leather is relatively easy to clean, but I also am careful about wearing shoes that have icy soles or have suede or nubuck uppers in the elements. Cleaning products like Reshoevn8r are great, but something as basic as white vinegar also works for getting stains out of most materials.

In addition to sneakers, are there any particular clothing brands that you admire or consider your favorites? If so, can you tell us why you resonate with those brands and what draws you to their designs or ethos?

I have a very basic style; I’m very much a t-shirt and jeans guy. Graphic tees are a staple for me, whether they feature my favorite sports teams, my schools, local restaurants or attractions, Americana nostalgia, or positive messages. I also love to support small brands. Two of my favorite small brands that I love to wear are shirts from The Bitter Southerner, a progressive southern brand, and Absolute Victory Everyday, a great Black-owned business.

Can you discuss any future goals or aspirations you have as a sneaker collector?

My only real goal is to continue to grow my collection in a way that’s true to me: buying what I like and what I want to wear.
